Aoelus cont..
Bloom is absent almost the entire chapter, making appearances here and there. I realized that this is because he is one of the only people (if not the only person) working! Everyone else is just socializing, making fun, and going to get drinks. Besides some minor characters, such as Monk and Red Murray, Steven is also the only person who has a mind to get things done.

Bloom is trying to get an ad in the paper, something about Keyes, a grocer or merchant. I wonder if it correlates with the key that Steven has to give up to Buck Mulligan. Bloom needs to two keys (he only has one) the only other key we have seen in the novel so far is Stevens. Coincidence?

Re: does it correlate with the key? yes. Crossed keys (Stephen and Bloom meeting), missing keys (Stephen's and Bloom's), keys as phallic capability, keys=nails (Lotus Eaters)=knowledge, wisdom (Stephen), keys=Irish home rule - i.e., owning one's own country and self.
Re: Holohan as Houlihan. I don't know. Even for Joyceans, this might indeed be a stretch. Common name.
Re: cat, erotic, food, sausage. Yes, yes, and yes - to quote Molly. Food and sex are blatantly linked in Lestrygonians, as you have hopefully already learned. Also, Bloom's empathy with animals and other humans is very important. In Lestrygonians he imagines what it's like to be a bird wondering on whom to poop. He has a common man's gift, while lacking the most common of gifts.

Proteus response good, and I like the Balthus (?), but don't stop or get behind or ... it could get rough when we are caught between a scylla and ... whatever.
